Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia in our society. The disease is characterized by pathological hallmarks such as Amyloid beta (Aß) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. These pathological changes are associated with neuronal dysfunction and severe cognitive impairment. In has long been recognized that both reactive astrocytes and activated microglia are closely surrounding Aß plaques and their presence can be considered an additional hallmark of the disease.
