Pharmacovigilance is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the science and activities relating to the detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of adverse effects or any other possible drug-related problem. There has been concern about the safety of medicines since the discovery of congenital abnormalities in babies delivered by women who had taken thalidomide during pregnancy in 1961.
