Hematopoiesis is a tightly regulated process which ensures production of appropriate amounts of different blood cell types. All blood cell types are derived from pluripotent hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). The HSCs are capable of self renewal. Committed myeloid progenitor cells are derived from the HSCs. Committed myeloid progenitor cells are able to proliferate and differentiate into mature blood cells like, granulocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils), lymphocytes, erythrocytes, platelets, macrophages, natural killer cells, dendritic cells and mast cells.
