The history of ZMA is closely related to the Artis Zoo which started in 1838. Later in the 19th century the University of Amsterdam took over the responsibility for the conservation and further development of the malacological collection, which now contains over 300.000 samples and about 4.300 type specimens. There has always been a good co-operation between ZMA and NMV, in the benefit of both parties
