Investigated the level of processing at which the signals of direction-selective neurons interact to serve the global process of motion-based image segmentation. Visual evoked potentials (EPs) were recorded in both humans and awake monkeys to a stimulus specifically designed to signal the presence of neuronal activity related to contour from motion processing. Response components specific to contour from motion were elicited only when the stimulus yielded a contour percept. To localize the neuronal origin of the odd response harmonics, recordings were made from awake monkeys.
