Investigated the temporal aspects of neuronal responses in the primary visual cortex of macaque monkeys evoked by texture segregation figure-ground displays. Recordings from the monkey primary visual cortex show that in late components of the neural responses, a correlate of boundary formation was expressed, followed by a filling-in (also called coloring) between the edges. These data favor a model of segmentation where boundary formation initiates surface filling-in
