In his discussion of Astrid Lindgren's The Brothers Lionheart (1973), the author argues that the story is a blend of a fairy tale for children and realistic description for grown-ups, resulting in two narrative perspectives which can be sensed throughout the book. A number of illustrative examples are given of how Lindgren, with varying success, tries to balance the two perspectives. The discrepancy culminates in the much-discussed ending which children are meant to experience as a consoling reunion of the two brothers after death, whereas grown-ups will realise that this is wishful thinking on the part of the dying younger brother who longs to join his elder brother who has earlier sacrificed his life for him
