The article assesses the realignment of housing policy in various countries in East Asia since the late 1990s. Housing policies in East Asia reflect differences in institutional contents and combinations of public and private elements. The promotion of home ownership policies allows the expansion of a number of owner-occupants and the establishment of housing markets. Other trends that influenced the reorientation of policy are the preference for democracy and the growing force of neo-liberalization
