A membrane absorber is a new type of gas-liquid contactor based on hollow fibre membranes. The units display the following features: high removal efficiency, small volume, independent gas and liquid flow, simple operation, excellent upscale-upability, no entrainment, flooding or channelling. A development program has been carried out for the removal of S02 from flue gas. A pilot plant study during three production seasons on an industrial location (potato starch production) has been carried out with the aim of demonstrating the operation of the membrane absorber under ‘on site’ conditions.
