Z-99 Absolute vibration levels at surface due to large dynamite charges at depth

In September 2001, a noise test for imaging the lithospheric crust below the Netherlands was carried out. In the late 1980’s, TNO shot a 2-D seismic profile through the Netherlands with the aim to image down to the lower crust, but their main target (acquisition parameters) was the upper sedimentary basin, and not the granitic crust down to the Mohorovic discontinuity. Therefore, in the noise test large dynamite charges and large offsets (4 km to 32 km) were recorded. However, since such large charges were never used for seismic purposes and its effect on the environment never investigated for Dutch circumstances, a separate test needed to be carried out. A separate vibration-level test was carried out in co-operation with TNO where absolute vibration levels were recorded and tested against the (stringent) norms as valid in a populated area like The Netherlands. In this paper we show the results of these tests, and draw some conclusions about the use of large dynamite charge
