Current damage control procedures are developed on the basis of a long-standing experience. However there are reasons to believe that these procedures do not account for major weapon-induced calamities. Fire fighting after substantial blast and fragmentation damage, due to a weaponhit, is quite beyond the scenarios encountered during training situations. For those cases computer simulations, covering all relevant weapon effects, are necessary to optimise ship design and damage control (DC) procedures. A simulation framework has been developed to assess the effectiveness of the damage control organisation on board ships.
