The paper describes how high energy crashworthiness with respect to ship collisions of a jacket can be predicted through explicit finite element analyses. The classical issue of the material models is discussed. In addition the topics of global jacket dynamics and the definition of failure are discussed. The structural arrangement of the jacket in relation to colliding ship shapes is touched upon. The paper starts with a brief discussion on ship impact energy probability distributions. Finally some recommendations are given for further research. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group
