A comprehensive programme of field trials with several new applications of dynamic (or variable) speed limits on motorways was carried out in The Netherlands in the years 2009- 2010. The objective of the programme was to gain more insight into the impact of dynamic, tailor made speed limits on various policy goals. Innovative solutions were developed, e.g. an algorithm using real time precipitation radar data to lower speed limits in adverse weather conditions and the reduction of shockwaves through the application of a dynamic speed limit algorithm.
