The spatial organization of membrane proteins in the plasma membrane is critical for signal transduction, cell communication and membrane trafficking. Tetraspanins organize functional higher-order protein complexes called 'tetraspanin-enriched microdomains (TEMs)' via interactions with partner molecules and other tetraspanins.
