Facing HIV in The Netherlands: Lived experiences of migrants living with HIV

Compared to the indigenous Dutch population, HIV prevalence is rather high among migrant and ethnic minority communities. Even though migrants are increasingly being recognised as an important group in HIV prevention, treatment, care and support, little is known about how they live their daily lives. Facing HIV in the Netherlands. Lived experiences of migrants living with HIV aims to bridge that gap. It presents the stories of fifteen HIV-positive people from migrant and ethnic minority backgrounds living in the Netherlands. The stories are from women and men, homosexuals and heterosexuals, who are living with or without a residence permit in the Netherlands. Their stories not only bring to the fore the medical aspects of HIV, but more importantly, unveil their socio-economic context and highlight the legal aspects related to living with HIV. Additionally, attention is paid to the intimate lives and sexual health of migrants with HIV. This book is not only aimed at policy makers, health staff and other professionals, but also at migrants who would like to learn more about living with HIV. By presenting and analysing the stories of migrants living with HIV in the Netherlands, this book draws attention to the problems and challenges faced by these people and highlights the assistance they need
