This study aimed at establishing the role of coping styles as prospective determinants of pain and disability in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee or hip. Data were used on 87 patients with OS of the hip and 129 patients with OA of the knee. Coping styles were assessed with a questionnaire, pain was assessed with a VAS, and disability was assessed using an observational method. Regression analysis was used to analyze relationships between the use of active and passive coping styles and the level of pain and disability 36 weeks later.
