This experiment was aimed at studying the role of rumen fill in signalling the termination of grazing bouts of dairy cows using a combination of experimental and modelling approaches. The day was divided into three main periods (06:00-12:00 h, 12:00-18:00 h and 18:00-24:00 h) during which the three main grazing bouts (dawn, afternoon and dusk) of dairy cows usually occur. Four rumen-cannulated dairy cows were used in a repeated measurements design, with time of day as the within subjects factor. The cows were rumen-evacuated at 6:00, 12:00, 18:00 and 23:30 h.
