International audienceThis article intends to support the hypothesis that the outline of Husserl’s famous conception of the european crisis and the teleological philosophy of history that goes with it are rooted in several ways in his experience of the First World War. After a short biographical recall, the article relies primarily on the significance of Fichte in the eyes of Husserl to show that his patriotism is ethical rather than political, and compatible as such with cosmopolitanism in a personal and supra-personal teleology of vocation in which the war itself is the crisis.
