Prevalence and risk factors of sexually transmitted infections among men attending dermatovenereological department

Author: Simona Sabulyte Aim of the study. To evaluate the prevalence of sexually transmited infections (STIs) and its associations with male patients’ risk factors. Tasks: 1. To evaluate the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), Mycoplasma genitalium (MG), Mycoplasma hominis (MH), Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU), Ureaplasma parvum (UP), Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) among men using nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs). 2. To identify clinical signs and symptoms in patiens with one or more STIs pathogens. 3. To determine risk factors among patients. Methods. It is a retrospective study. Analysis use patients (n=346) data from the department of dermatovenerology, Kaunas clinics, gathered in 2013. Data include complaints related to STIs, sexual behavior, contraceptive use, addictions. Participants provided a 10 to 50 ml sample of first-void urine. CT, NG, MG, MH, UU, UP, TV were detected in first void urine, using method of multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR).Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 20.0 program, using χ2 criteria for qualitative differences and Student's t test for quantitative values. To test the hypotheses level of significant was set at 0,05. Results. A total of 317 men were enrolled and evaluated for risk factors and clinical characteristics. Average age was 36,1 ± 12,2. Among all participants of the study 17,0 % were diagnosed with one or more STIs: 77,7 % of patients had one STI, 20,4 % - 2 STIs and 1,8 % - 3 STIs. The prevalence of CT, NG, MG, MH, UU, UP and TV infections were found to be 6,3 %, 0,9 %, 1,3 %, 5 %, 6,6 %, 0,3 %, 0,6 %. Patients without known STIs more often (59,8 % ) reported symptoms comparing to patients diagnosed with STIs (53,7 %). The most common complaints were urethral discharge (12,9 % ) and skin rashes (11,0 %). Two STIs pathogens were detected in 77,8 % of men who had more than one sex partner in the past 6 months. Patients with STIs were significantly younger (31,3 ± 9,78) comparing to men without STIs (37,37 ± 12,27) (p = 0,022).
