The framework for the school supervision in improving teacher's teaching and learning in Nigerian secondary school educational system

This research was conducted due to the importance of school supervision's role in improving teachers and learning (TTL) in the Nigerian educational system by using a quantitative approach. The aim is to develop a framework for school supervision for the improvement of teachers' TTL and also to give insights on how supervision influences teachers, supervisors, principals and parents' effectiveness of TTL. The research population for the study was drawn from three (3) geopolitical zones of Nigeria with 540 participants. They were 250 teachers, 22 school supervisors. 68 school principals and 200 parents. The survey method through questionnaires was applied for the data collection. The reliability or Cronbach alpha of the instrument was 0.70 which is acceptable. Further, the data were analysed using descriptive and multiple regression. The findings of the research reveal that school supervision plays a potential role towards improving teachers' teaching and learning; teachers perceived their advice and feedback given through supervisors' reports; and there were lack of proper actions from the respective authorities for effective teachers' TTL. On the other hand, school, supervisions had succeed in establishing positive relations with teachers by using the modern democratic mode of supervision and friendly language. Therefore, the Government should ensure training of new supervisors and the re-training the senior supervisors accordingly with special training programs with experienced and qualified school supervisors. The systematic implementation of the policies, strategies, objectives and plans of the school needs to be constantly supervised for the purpose of improvement. In conclusion, the policy makers in the educational sector will be able to suggest the appropriate styles and strategies of supervision under different circumstances. It will also help the educational administrators and planners to know how to proved quality education in schools through intense supervision and proper monitoring of the schools. This research is considered a valuable contribution to the body of knowledge where it highlights the supervisory roles for teachers, supervisors, principals and parents in a single framework when comparing to previous study that explain them differently
