Addressing environmental issues in agriculture requires research that brings together the biotechnical sciences and the social sciences. The purpose of this article is to describe how the sociologist's approach and the agronomist’s approach can complement one another in this kind of research. To do so, it analyzes two types of situations the author (a sociologist) commonly encounters: In the first case, agronomists – occupying an external position with regard to the practical reasoning of farmers – call on sociologists to assist them in “making farmers change;” in the second, agronomists – occupying an internal position with regard to the practical reasoning of farmers – challenge sociologists’ claim to understanding and interpreting farmers’ practices. The article presents the sociologist’s approach to understanding how and why farmers adopt different farming practices, emphasizing how this approach differs from that of agronomists. It concludes by considering interdisciplinary boundaries that exist within the study of agriculture and suggests key points of attention for research seeking to transcend these boundaries by fostering interdisciplinary communication.Le traitement de la question environnementale en agriculture conduit à mener des travaux qui articulent sciences biotechniques et sciences sociales. Le but de cet article est de rendre compte de la façon dont, dans le cadre de ces travaux, la démarche du sociologue et celle de l’agronome peuvent s’agencer. Il s’appuie sur l’analyse de deux situations opposées auxquelles, en tant que sociologue l’auteur a été le plus couramment confronté : l’une où, en position d’extériorité par rapport aux raisonnements pratiques des agriculteurs, l’agronomie fait appel à la sociologie afin de « faire changer » les agriculteurs ; l’autre, où en position d’intériorité, elle dispute au sociologue la compréhension des pratiques des agriculteurs. L’article présente la démarche du sociologue de compréhension des pratiques des agriculteurs et dit en quoi elle se distingue de celle des agronomes. Il conclut sur le bornage interprétatif et l’émergence de points d’attention pour l’enquête que permet le dialogue interdisciplinaire
