Social influence and impact on the collective memory of the Native Residential Schools in Canada: 1867 - 1996

Das Native Residential School System (NRS) wurde von der kanadischen Regierung gemeinsam mit der katholischen Kirche und den protestantischen Kirchen in Kanada im Jahr 1867 begründet und finanziert und endete mit der Schließung der letzten Schule im Jahr 1996. In diesem Zeitraum wurden 150.000 Kinder der indigenen Bevölkerung in dem 125 Schulen umfassenden System in ganz Kanada untergebracht. Viele der Überlebenden behaupten, dass sie durch die Schulen ihre kulturelle Identität verloren haben und dass ihnen physischer, psychischer und sexueller Missbrauch von den Mitarbeitern der Schulen widerfahren ist. Dies dient dazu die persönlichen Gedanken und Meinungen der Interviewpartner zu diesem Thema wiederzugeben. Zu den Interviewpartnern gehören indigene wie nicht indigene Kanadier. Die Interviewpartner wurden nach ihrer Expertise oder persönlichen Erfahrung in diesem Gebiet ausgewählt. Im Zusammenhang mit dem NRS gibt es zwei Bezeichnungen, die die verschiedenen beteiligten Gruppen beschreiben. Erstens die indigene Bevölkerung Kanadas (Aboriginal Canadians) und zweitens die nicht indigene Bevölkerung Kanadas (Non-Aboriginal Canadians). Mit indigener Bevölkerung Kanadas ist jene Gruppe gemeint, die eine indigene Abstammung hat und in Kanada lebt. Mit der nicht indigenen Bevölkerung Kanadas sind die Menschen gemeint, die in Kanada leben und nicht indigener Abstammung sind. Die indigene Bevölkerung Kanadas macht laut der Erhebung im Jahre 2012 4.3% der gesamten kanadischen Bevölkerung aus. Die Gesamtbevölkerung Kanadas beträgt derzeit ca. 35 Millionen Menschen. Daraus folgt, dass die indigene Bevölkerung eine Minderheit darstellt, obwohl sie einen wichtigen Platz in der Geschichte Kanadas einnimmt. Das Konzept des kollektiven Gedächtnisses von Maurice Halbwachs bildet den theoretischen Rahmen für die DissertationIn den Interviews kommen die nicht indigene Bevölkerung Kanadas sowie die indigene Bevölkerung Kanadas gleichermaßen zu Wort. Vertreter beider Gruppen geben ihre Meinung über die Geschichte des NRS wieder. Zugleich wird analysiert, wie diese Meinungen durch das soziale Umfeld mitgeformt wurden.In Canada, the Native Residential school system was first established and funded by the Federal Government of Canada in cooperation with the Catholic and Protestant Churches of Canada in 1867, and continued until the final school closure in 1996. During this time, 150,000 Aboriginal children were placed in a network of 125 schools across Canada. The system was designed to ‘educate and integrate the Aboriginal into white Christian society’ and ‘kill the Indian in the child.’ There are currently 80,000 survivors of the system. Many of these survivors claim they lost their cultural identity, suffering physical, sexual, and emotional abuse from the school staff. It has been reported that at least 4,000 children lost their lives while in attendance of these schools. Furthermore, this history and its impact on Aboriginal Canadians remain relatively unknown to the majority of non- Aboriginal Canadians. The literature review provides a detailed history of the system, researched from the latest available resources. The doctoral project also examines this history through the lens of a selection of interview partners. This is done in order to reconstruct the thoughts and opinions that the interview partners have on this particular subject (including Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal Canadians). The interview partners are determined by their expertise and experience with the subject matter. Those selected are also chosen in order to convey the maximum variation of perspectives on the subject. When discussing the history of Native Residential Schools (sometimes abbreviated to NRS), there are two terms used to describe the groups of people involved: Aboriginal Canadians, meaning individuals with Aboriginal ethnicity and residing in Canada, and Non-Aboriginal Canadians, meaning individuals with no Aboriginal ethnicity and residing in Canada. Presently, Aboriginal Canadians are no longer referred to as ‘Indians’ as this was a past incorrect label. The usual labels for this group and therefore used in this thesis are the following: Aboriginals, Aboriginal Canadians, or First Nations. Aboriginal Canadians compose 4.3 % of the total population according to the 2012 Canadian census, corresponding to 1,400,685 Aboriginal people in Canada. Canada’s total population is presently about 35 million. Therefore this population remains a minority though it has played an integral role in Canadian history. A theory of collective memory, developed by Maurice Halbwachs, frames the research design, by incorporating his ideas that social groups form a collective memory that is constructed by interaction and communication. Therefore the research will draw from data collected from the interviews with members of both non-Aboriginal and Aboriginal Canadians, sharing their views on the history of the Native Residential System, while examining how those views have been influenced by their social environment. Data collected from the interviews will be analyzed through qualitative content analysis in order to reveal hidden assumptions and patterns of meaning and, thus, providing a greater depth of understanding of the social influences and hidden narratives represented in the collective memory of this chapter of Canadian history, with its varying and often controversial perspectives
