Das Native Residential School System (NRS) wurde von der kanadischen Regierung gemeinsam mit der katholischen Kirche und den protestantischen Kirchen in Kanada im Jahr 1867 begründet und finanziert und endete mit der Schließung der letzten Schule im Jahr 1996. In diesem Zeitraum wurden 150.000 Kinder der indigenen Bevölkerung in dem 125 Schulen umfassenden System in ganz Kanada untergebracht. Ziel dieses Systems war es die indigene Bevölkerung auszubilden und in die weiße christliche Gesellschaft zu integrieren und dabei „den Indianer im Kind zu töten“ (kill the Indian in the child).
