Die stetig wachsende Zahl der öffentlich verfügbaren Proteinstrukturen stellen eine ungemein nützliche Informationsquelle für Strukturbiologen dar. Allerdings ist es eine Herausforderung, eine große Zahl von Proteinstrukturen mit Computer-Algorithmen zu analysieren. Die Kontakte (Interaktionen) zwischen den Aminosäuren eines Proteins können als Netzwerke, genannt 'residue contact networks' (RCNs), repräsentiert werden. In dieser Darstellung werden, entsprechend der Graphentheorie, Aminosäuren als Knoten und Kontakte als Kanten repräsentiert.
