Visual culture and identity - self-portraits, emotions and memories in the teaching of visual arts

This work is a result of a research conducted in a public school in the city of Pelotas, Brazil, which aimed to investigate the perceptions and feelings experienced by students from two classes of 5th year, as the construction of their identities in contact with images of visual culture. I looked to see what the possibilities for change in the apprehension of these images, provided by the activities developed in Visual Arts classes, from a critical education and aesthetics. The theoretical foundation of the research is based on Hernández (2000; 2007), which studies the relevance of visual culture in the school and the critical understanding and aesthetics that students can acquire by studying these images; Hall (2005), which deals with issues of cultural identity in the context of a post-modern world and Meira and Pillotto (2010) that reflect on affection as an essential factor in the processes of teaching and learning. Data were collected through photographic records, the images produced by the students and the reports written by them. In addition, observations were made from notes taken during the activities in the classroom for me. Founded from the proposed framework, the survey data show that it is possible to carry out work using images and everyday objects of the students, promoting a critical education and aesthetics of the same from these visualities. I found that there was production of meaning by students, as these established relationships of the images studied in the classes of Visual Arts with their everyday experiences. Still, it's important to note that students demonstrated processes of identification, belonging, feelings and memories in relation to the images chosen by them for the work done in the classroom.Este trabalho parte de uma pesquisa realizada em uma escola pública municipal da cidade de Pelotas, RS, que teve por objetivo investigar as percepções e sentidos vivenciados pelos estudantes de duas turmas de 5º ano, quanto à construção de suas identidades no contato com as imagens da cultura visual. Busquei ainda verificar quais as possibilidades de mudança na apreensão destas imagens, proporcionadas pelas atividades desenvolvidas nas aulas de Artes Visuais, a partir de uma educação crítica e estética. A fundamentação teórica da pesquisa se baseia em Hernández (2000; 2007) que estuda a relevância da cultura visual na escola e a compreensão crítica e estética que os alunos podem adquirir através do estudo destas imagens; Hall (2005) que trata das questões de identidade cultural na perspectiva de um mundo pós-moderno; e Meira e Pillotto (2010) que refletem sobre o afeto como fator essencial nos processos de ensino e aprendizagem. Os dados foram coletados através de registros fotográficos, das imagens produzidas pelos alunos e dos relatos escritos pelos mesmos. Além disso, foram feitas anotações das observações realizadas durante as atividades em sala de aula por mim. Fundamentados com base no referencial proposto, os dados da pesquisa revelaram que é possível realizar um trabalho utilizando imagens e objetos do cotidiano dos estudantes, promovendo uma educação crítica e estética dos alunos a partir destas visualidades. Verifiquei que ocorreu produção de sentidos pelos estudantes, pois estes estabeleceram relações das imagens estudadas nas aulas de Artes Visuais com suas vivências cotidianas. Ainda, é relevante salientar que os estudantes demonstraram processos de identificação, pertencimento, afetos e memórias em relação às imagens escolhidas por eles para o trabalho realizado em sala de aula
