Influence of the type of intraradicular posts in the success of endodontic treatment

The success and prognosis of endodontic treatment depend on many variables. It is unclear whether different types of intraradicular posts may contribute to a better or worse endodontic response. Intraradicular posts are required to promote retention of the coronal restorative material to the radicular portion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the success of the endodontic treatment in teeth with different types of intraradicular posts (glass fiber or cast metal post). This prospective clinical study consisted of 86 adult patients, with a total of 121 teeth. The teeth were grouped according to the radiographic evaluation of the root canal filling, and apical status was assessed using the periapical index (PAI). The statistical analyses were performed using SigmaStat software (version 3.5; Systat, Richmond, CA, USA). Descriptive analyses were used to characterize the teeth included in the study and the reasons for failure. Survival curves were created using the Kaplan–Meier method and the log-rank test was used to examine differences between groups according to post type and dental group (P < 0.05). The 121 endodontically treated teeth that received intraradicular retainers, 81 (66.9%) received fiber posts and 40 (33.1%) received cast post. The number of teeth with adequate density of the root filling was 114 (94.2%), and the number of teeth with adequate apical limit of filling was 110 (90.9%). Five cases (4.1%) were considered unsuccessful. All cases of failure were observed at 12 months of follow-up. Although the failures occurred only in glass fiber posts, endodontic failures were not related to the post type.
