Survey on Victimation et sentiment d’insécurité survey conducted by the Institut d’aménagement et d’urbanisme de la region Île-de-France shows that almost one in two residents of the region feels worried about being robbed or mugged while travelling in public transportation. Based on thirty interviews with Université Paris 13 students, this study examines the mechanism of production of this social phenomenon. Two main results emerge. First, three types of factors leading to the emergence of fear of crime in public transportation are identified.
