Stăniloae and Kasper are two theologians whose approaches to the long-dividing issue of the filioque have been guided by a methodology of ecumenical conversation that encourages their owns traditions to learn from the criticism coming from the other side. They both emphasized that the question ‘What a Church can learn from other Christian Churches?’ is of primary importance when it comes to the ecumenical dialogue on extremely sensitive issues such as the filioque. In so doing, they showed that the divisions and tensions existing between Churches can be attenuated as long as these Churches remain in an open conversation, ready to learn from and teach the other partner of dialogue.status: publishe
