There is substantial evidence that disturbances in learning and memory are associated with a damaged mediodorsal (MD) thalamus. On account of its strong afferent input from the central nucleus of the amygdala, the MD thalamus has also been implicated in the expression of fear-related emotions. Furthermore, this nucleus communicates with the prefrontal cortex, namely the cingulate and orbitofrontal cortex. The paraventricular (PVT) thalamus similarly communicates with the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, more precisely the central amygdala and limbic cortices, suggesting it plays a role in negative emotional states.
