This thesis examines a lesser-known Jesuit mission in nineteenth-century South India, the New Madura Mission (NMM). While Catholic mission history in India has largely focused on the innovation of the Old Madura Mission (1606-1773), the NMM has been comparatively disregarded as unimportant despite its influence on Catholicism in the region. In particular, the mission was instrumental to the development of the fully Indian Jesuit order existing in Tamil Nadu today. Engaging with theories of mimesis and conversion, this thesis analyzes missionary writings to show how the Jesuits rewrote and reshaped Indian Christianity in response to their experience in South India.
