Design Implementation of Pile Foundation

The objective of this Bachelor’s thesis was to design a pile foundation for a residential building. The aim was to identify aspects affecting pile foundation design in a challenging environment because the building was to be built on a reclaimed land from the Baltic sea and almost half of the foundation slab would extend into the sea, resulting in very high lateral forces due to ice loading during winter. The site was to be stabilised using deep soil mixing columns. To enable the design, different foundation types were studied. Types of foundation and various categories of pile foundation were considered, together with the with the Geotechnical aspects involved in foundation design. The details of the project such as the structural and natural loadings, as well as forces acting on the building structure were studied. SCIA software was a tool used to perform the finite element analysis of the structure. The loading of the analysis model was done per the corresponding Eurocode. With the designed compressive strength capped at around 10 MN and tension anchoring capacity at 2.2 MN, suitable design layout was achieved with 75 piles. This thesis provides an outline of the various aspects involved in the design of pile foundation for the beginners in the field of foundation design
