Measure the Correlation Between Body Mass Index (BMI) and Risk of Bronchial Asthma Development Among the Latvian Population

Bakalaura darba tēma - sakarības novērtējums starp ķermeņa masas indeksu un bronhiālās astmas attīstības risku Latvijas populācijā. Darba mērķis ir noskaidrot vai ir saistība starp ķermeņa masas indeksu un bronhiālās astmas attīstības risku Latvijas populācijā. Izvirzīta hipotēze: Paaugstināts ĶMI ir riska faktors BA attīstībai. Šāda veida pētījums Latvijā līdz šim nav veikts. Tēmas aktualitāti nosaka pastāvīgs populācijas ĶMI pieaugums un ar to saistītais hronisko slimību skaits, no kurām viena ir bronhiālā astma. Astmas pacientiem ar palielinātu ĶMI neskatoties uz terapiju ir sliktākas astmas kontroles iespējas, kas būtiski pasliktina dzīves kvalitāti un palielina mirstības risku. Māsu praksē pētījums ļaus prognozēt aprūpes specifiku astmas pacientiem ar palielinātu ĶMI. Pētniecības instruments – aptaujas anketa, un pētniecības metode – kvantitatīva. Rezultāti ar būtisku ticamību (p<0.00001) apstiprināja, ka sievietēm ar aptaukošanos un sievietēm ar lieko ķermeņa svaru (p<0.006) tiek biežāk diagnosticēta BA nekā sievietēm ar normālu ķermeņa svaru. Konstatējām arī, ka sievietēm ar aptaukošanos BA tiek diagnosticēta biežāk nekā sievietēm ar lieko svaru (p<0.008). Vīriešiem šāda sakarība ar statistisku ticamību netika konstatēta.The theme of the Bachelor thesis is to measure the correlation between Body Mass Index (BMI) and risk of bronchial asthma development among the Latvian population. The objective of this research is to determine if there is a correlation between BMI and risk of bronchial asthma development among the Latvian population. The hypothesis of the research: increased BMI is a risk factor for bronchial asthma development and such research has not been performed in Latvia to the present date. The importance of the theme is substantiated by continual rise of BMI globally and resulting chronic illnesses, among which asthma is one of them. Asthma patients with elevated BMI in spite of the therapy have more severe asthma and poorer asthma management which significantly worsens their quality of life and increases mortality risk. In the nursing practice such research could help to anticipate potential health issues and risks for asthma patients with increased BMI. The research tools employed are questionnaires and quantitative research methods. The results of the research: with substantial validity of (p<0.00001) have confirmed that obese women and those overweight (p<0.006) are diagnosed with bronchial asthma more often than women with average weight. It was also determined that obese women were diagnosed with bronchial asthma more often than overweight women (p
