Wärme auf mittlerem Temperaturniveau ist durch die Verbrennung von Biomasse oder Biogas, als Abwärme oder aus solarthermischen Anlagen verfügbar. Es ist sinnvoll, diese Wärme zu verstromen und dafür sind Clausius-Rankine Kreisprozesse von größtem Interesse. Es ist bekannt, dass organische Fluide für Mitteltemperaturprozesse besser geeignet sind als Wasser. Solche Prozesse werden Organic Rankine Cycles oder ORC-Prozesse genannt. Die Optimierung der Kreisprozesse erfordert die Kenntnis der thermodynamischen Stoffeigenschaften von möglichen Arbeitsmedien, wie z. B. von Siloxanen und Aromaten.
