Geschützte geographische Herkunftsbezeichnungen erlauben ProduzentInnen Qualitätsstandards selbst zu definieren, den Ruf der Lebensmittel zu schützen und KonsumentInnen deren geographische Herkunft und regionsspezifische Qualität zu kommunizieren. Der Herkunftsschutz unterstützt die Produktdifferenzierung sowie reduziert das Risiko von Missbrauch und Trittbrettfahrertum. In einem kollektiven Registrierungsprozess treffen regionale Betriebe sowie andere Beteiligte gemeinsame Entscheidungen.
