Electrosurgery is the use of high-frequency alternating current (AC) to illicit a clinical response in tissue (e.g., cutting or cauterization). Power-electronics converters have been demonstrated to generate the necessary output voltage and current for electrosurgery. The design goal of the converter is to regulate output power while supplying high-frequency AC. Standard electrosurgical generators (ESGs) are based on resonant inverters, which constrain the output frequency and waveshape. This work describes a fast tracking current driven ESG capable of shaping the output AC waveform over a range of frequencies, thus providing improved flexibility and control in electrosurgery applications
