International audienceSimpop is a model which simulates the emergence and the evolution of a settlement system on a period of 2000 years. It is the result of a collaboration between geographers and specialists of artificial intelligence and it is based on a multi-agent system approach. The basic principle of this approach is that from local level interactions emerge coherent structures at a higher level. This property enables to modelize some hypothesis about auto-organization mechanisms in the dynamics of a system of cities.
