Sleep is a vigilance state observed in most of animal species and is involved in many functions. Paradoxical sleep (PS, or Rapid Eye Movement Sleep), an essential sleep state, seems to be closely linked to emotion regulation. It seems that one aspect of this function could be due to the potentiating role of PS in emotional long-term memory, and the paradoxical decrease in the emotional tone associated to the memorized event. We tested the hypothesis that the first hours of post-learning PS could be important for remote long term emotional memory in mice.
