Agroecology and industrial ecology can be viewed as complementary means for reducing the environmental footprint of animal farming systems. Agroecology aims to stimulate natural processes in weakly artificialized systems to reduce inputs and valorize their diversity. Industrial ecology aims to close system loops in artificialized systems, thereby reducing demand for inputs and lowering pollution. We propose five principles for the design of ecology-based production systems: adopting health management practices that minimize the use of chemical drugs, decreasing the inputs needed for production, decreasing pollution by optimizing the metabolic functioning of farming systems, enhancing diversity to strengthen system resilience, and preserving...
