Development of spelling ability and letter‐sound orientation in primary school children

Recent research has established the link between disorders of spoken and written language. Consequently, speech and language therapists serving paediatric populations often need to assess children's spelling abilities. However, there are few appropriate assessments of normal abilities available. In order to describe, quantitatively and qualitatively, the normal development of spelling ability in the primary school years, a modified version of the Schonell Graded Spelling Test (1956) was used to assess 1372 children in grades 2–6 in five city and two rural schools. The results were analysed in terms of three scores: percentage of words spelled correctly; words not attempted; and misspellings that were phonologically plausible. Spelling ability varied according to the school attended and the social status of the child. Children in higher socioeconomic status groups were better spellers. Children who were good spellers tended to generate more phonologically plausible misspellings. Further, there was a strong tendency for the percentage of errors which were phonologically plausible to increase developmentally. Thus, the results support models of spelling development showing that phonological awareness is associated with the acquisition of adequate spelling ability. However, alternative strategies must also be acquired to account for the successful spelling of orthographically irregular words. Des recherches récentes ont établi le lien entre les désordres du langage parlé et ceux du langage écrit. Par conséquent, le orthophonistes qui s'occupent d'enfants sont souvent obligés d'évaluer les capacités orthographiques de ces derniers. Or il n'existe guère d'évaluations normalisées adéquates. Afin de décrire, qualitativement et quantitativement, le développement normal de l'orthographe lors de la scolarité primaire, l'on a utilisé une version modifiée du test d'orthographe gradué de Schonell (1956). 1372 enfants ont été ainsi évalués, allant de la 2e à la 6e année de scolarité, dans 5 écoles urbaines et 2 écoles rurales. Les résultats ont été analysés sous trois rubriques: le pourcentage de mots orthographiés correctement, ceux sur lesquels les enfants ont fait l'impasse, et les erreurs justifiables du point de vue phonologique. Le niveau d'orthographe a varié suivant l'école et l'origine sociale de l'enfant: ceux qui venaient de groupes socio‐économiques plus élevés obtenaient de meilleurs résultats; une meilleure orthographe allait en général avec des erreurs plus souvent justifiables du pont de vue phonologique. De plus, un accroissement du pourcentage des erreurs justifiables phonologiquement allait nettement de pair avec le développement des enfants. Par conséquent les résultats confirment les modèles du développement de la capacité orthographique qui montrent que cette capacité est en rapport avec l'acquisition de la capacité phonologique. Cependant, il faut aussi tenir compte de l'acquisition d'autres stratégies en ce qui concerne les mots anglais dont l'orthographe est irrégulière. Zwecks quantitativer und qualitativer Beschreibung der normalen Rechtschreibentwicklung in den Grundschuljahren wurde eine modifizierte Form des Schonell Graded Spelling Test (1956) verwendet, um 1372 Kinder in den Schuljahren 2–6 in fünf Stadt‐ und zwei Landschulen zu untersuchen. Kinder mit besserer Rechtschreibung produzierten mehr phonologisch plausible Rechtschreibfehler. Dazu nahm der Prozentsatz phonologisch plausibler Fehler mit dem Alter zu. Damit unterstützen die Ergebnisse diejenigen Modelle der Rechtschreibentwicklung, die eine Verbindung zwischen phonologischem Bewußtsein und Rechtschreibfähigkeit zeigen. Andere Strategien müssen jedoch auch erworben werden, um das korrekte Rechtschreiben bei orthographisch unregelmäßigen Wörtern zu erklären. 1993 Royal College of Speech & Language Therapist
