This PhD thesis analyzes existing empirical research and provides ways of integrating new types of information based on network tools. The research is contributing to the application of network theory in finance and économies, by representing firms' interactions and countries' trade relations as graphs. Intuitively, one would expect that the probability of a bank being in distress should increase if it has other partners that are in distress. One of the research projects analyzes whether models that predict distress in banks, for example anticipate difficulties two years in advance, can be improved by taking into account the possible links banks have with one another.
