The microstructure of molybdenum disulphide and tungsten disulphide unsupported catalysts has been characterized by high-resolution electron microscopy. Lattice resolution of edge planes shows the typical layered structure, however in this case, additional plane curvature and dislocations am seen. The material shows a micro-domain arrangement where planes like (101), (103) and (105) are identified based in the interplanar spacings. In other cases the (002) basal plane was found to exhibit plane shifts or kinks
