Sinopsis de los mamíferos del Estado de México, México

The mammalian fauna of the State of Mexico is included in 20 families 61 genera and 103 species. Here we make a retrospective analysis and present an updated taxonomic checklist of the mammals of the state. In the list, the reference of the original description, the type locality, as well as the authority and the reference of the accepted bi or trinominal name-combination are provided for each species or subspecies. We also mention the general distribution of the species and the references of the published records for each species or subspecies. The more abundant groups in number of species are bats with 40, rodents with 36, carnivore with 11, insectivores and lagomorphs with six, opossums with two and both xenarthrans and artiodactyls with one each. The type localities of 13 taxa are within the state and there are also 26 endemic species, 19 of which have a wide distribution in the country and seven are restricted to the Mexican Transvolcanic Belt. The knowledge of the mammals in the State of Mexico has proceeded discontinuosuly both in time and in number of taxa. In 1777 the first species was mentioned for the state, but it was until 1827 when the first record made and the last one was in 1992.
