International audienceScience has an enormous influence over many social issues today. This article examines the role we attribute to scientists’ contributions to these debates. We will re-examine the question of objectivity as an ideal and that, more controversial, of responsibility. Our exploration of these matters will be fuelled by a discussion of literary texts and historial facts, and, more particularly, we will endeavour to decipher reactions in the wake of natural catastrophes, which, as the recent Aquila trial has shown, are not without ambiguity..La science a aujourd’hui un impact majeur sur beaucoup de grandes questions de société. Nous nous interrogerons sur la place que nous accordons à la parole du scientifique. Pour cela, nous reviendrons sur l’idéal d’objectivité et sur l’épineuse question de la responsabilité. Notre propos sera illustré par la discussion de textes littéraires et de faits historiques. Nous nous attacherons, tout particulièrement, à décrypter les réactions engendrées par la catastrophe naturelle, qui comme le récent procès de l’Aquila l’a démontré, ne sont pas sans ambiguïté
