Urban systems : Recent transformations in the French urban system

International audienceThe evolution in the socio-economic character of the 138 largest urban agglomerations in France between 1954 and 1975 consists of three tendancies, interpreted in this article according to their incidence on the structure of the urban system. The most important includes the changes which have equally affected all the agglomerations, and provoked a translation of the system without changing its form. The two other tendancies group together the differential changes : ones has compared the profiles of the agglomerations by reducing the functional specializations based on the geographic concentration of the divisions of activity; the other introduces a new segregation in socio-economic urban structures, between « growth centres » and « peripheral » nuclei.L'évolution des caractères socio-économiques des 138 plus grandes agglomérations de province entre 1954 et 1975 comporte trois tendances, interprétées dans cet article d'après leur incidence sur la structure du système urbain. La première, la plus importante, englobe les changements qui ont affecté également toutes les agglomérations, et provoqué une translation du système sans en modifier la forme. Les deux autres tendances regroupent des changements différentiels : l'une a rapproché les profils des agglomérations en réduisant les spécialisations fonctionnelles fondées sur la concentration géographique des branches d'activité; l'autre introduit une nouvelle ségrégation dans les structures socio-économiques urbaines, entre des « centres de croissance » et des noyaux « périphériques »
