International audienceThe phenomenon of free software constitutes a particularly interesting case for studying the notion of ‘margin’ and its transformation into a resource for action in the digital era. Two cases are studied. On the one hand, the construction of the LibreOffice project at the global level showed that key developers of existing software programs have organized themselves at the margin in order to create a common good. On the other hand, the 2008 Free Software Meeting (RMLL) in Mont-de-Marsan (France) revealed that local activists were able to mobilize the Movement at the margin of the digital world.
