La marge comme ressource pour l’action dans la mouvance du logiciel libre‪

International audienceThe phenomenon of free software constitutes a particularly interesting case for studying the notion of ‘margin’ and its transformation into a resource for action in the digital era. Two cases are studied. On the one hand, the construction of the LibreOffice project at the global level showed that key developers of existing software programs have organized themselves at the margin in order to create a common good. On the other hand, the 2008 Free Software Meeting (RMLL) in Mont-de-Marsan (France) revealed that local activists were able to mobilize the Movement at the margin of the digital world. These two examples clearly demonstrate that actors are able to take advantage of the marginality of the movement itself to reach the margins of other areas of representation; mobilization of marginality and of margins is facilitated by the growing hybridity of the space between digital and non-digital.‪Le phénomène du logiciel libre constitue un cas particulièrement intéressant pour questionner la notion de marge et sa transformation en ressource pour l’action à l’ère du numérique. Deux cas sont étudiés. D’une part, l’élaboration à l’échelle mondiale du projet LibreOffice montre que des développeurs clés d’un logiciel plus ancien ont su s’organiser dans les marges pour en faire un bien commun. D’autre part, la tenue des Rencontres Mondiales du Logiciel Libre (RMLL) à Mont-de-Marsan en 2008 révèle que les activistes locaux ont été en mesure de mobiliser la Mouvance sur un territoire marginal de l’espace Monde numérique. Les deux exemples développés montrent bien que les acteurs sont capables de faire fond sur la marginalité même de la Mouvance pour atteindre les marges d’autres espaces de représentation ; la mobilisation de la marginalité et des marges est facilitée par l’hybridité croissante de l’espace entre numérique et non-numérique
