International audienceTaking into account of the manuscripts of Ferninand de Saussure changes considerably the contours of saussurian linguistics as designed by the Cours de linguistique générale, published posthumously. This statement is true especially for the concept of "linearity". Its is addressed in a very succinct way in the Cours de linguistique générale. The adjective linear occurs only twice and applies sometimes to the sign, sometimes to the language. The object of the article is to exhume the variations and the productivity of a reflection about linearity of which the posthume publication of 1916 does not give full account.
