Groupes ethniques autochtones des hautes terres du Cambodge au début du XX e siècle, essai de démographie historique

International audienceRisky as it may seem, a diachronic reconstruction of the demography of ethnic minorities in mainland Southeast Asia can, nevertheless, be achieved through critical analysis of available data.For instance, between 1863 and 1954, the French colonial administration conducted various population counts in he northeastern provinces of Cambodia, to which one must add three country-wide censuses in 1903, 1921, and 1926, and one in the then “newly-controlled” Haut-Chhlong area in 1936. Thanks to these and to a recent census conducted in 1998, we can reconstruct the growth of the population of the highlands, and demonstrate that the size of ethnic minorities populations was highly underestimated. This is because many children were not included in the count and, in the remotest villages, adults systematically avoided being counted in order to evade taxes. Contrary to what colonial propaganda leads us to believe, these populations kept growing steadily until the second half of the twentieth century when their growth slowed down dramatically.Le dénombrement historique des minorités ethniques en Asie du Sud-Est continentale est un exercice périlleux mais qui peut être mené à bien par une approche critique des sources. Dans le nord-est du Cambodge, l’administration coloniale française a réalisé plusieurs recensements et dénombrement entre 1863 et 1954, notamment en 1903 et 1936. Ceux-ci permettent, en utilisant le recensement de 1998, de reconstituer l’évolution de la population des habitants des hautes terres. Il apparaît que le nombre de membres de ces minorités ethniques a été systématiquement sous-évalué, notamment en raison des omissions d’enfants ou des stratégies des habitants pour échapper à l’impôt. Leur population, contrairement à ce que laissait entendre la propagande coloniale, n’a pas cessé de croître. La hausse s’est considérablement ralentie dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle
