Environmental monitoring, assessment and conservation programmes worldwide have led to the development of scientific and technological methods to study the changes in our environment. As a result, a technique for monitoring atmospheric metal deposition was developed in Sweden in the 1960s. This technique is based on the principle that, carpet-forming moss obtains its nutrients from dry deposition particles in the air. The Swedish Environmental Research institute (IVL) has a database of concentrations of metals in terrestrial mosses. These were sampled during the national moss surveys (1975 – 2000).
