New Zealand war commemoration and historiography focuses on the campaigns of early 1941 on the Greek mainland and Crete. But thew relationship lasted for years following these battles. Politics, humanitarianism and war intertwined in a turbulent period . The Pacific dominion leadership showed considerable independent thinking and action in some areas. Not so much in others. Sections of New Zealand society took sides in Greek-related politics, especially the British policies at the time of liberation and during the Greek Civil War of 1946-1949
