This work discusses the principles and application of the multiple mapping conditioning (MMC) framework to the simulation of turbulent premixed combustion. While it is clear that, conceptually, MMC allows for the enforcement of the consistency of probability density function models with the flamelet limit, the implementation of this idea is non-trivial and requires substantial analysis. This work focuses on the principles of selecting reference variables suitable for the simulation of general premixed combustion cases. Reference variables based on the level set, shadow positions and progress variable are considered.
