Comparison of solubility of temporary cements

Relevance of the problem – cements have to have many optimal features, one of them – resistance to solubility. When cement dissolves, various complications such as anticementation, secondary caries or marginal lekeage can occur. Changes in saliva pH which often happen if the pacient has systemic or oral diseases and can influence the solubility of temporary cements. It is important to find out how the composition of the cement and saliva pH can influence the solubility of temporary cements and to choose the most stable and least soluble temporary cement. Aim of the work – to compare the solubility of temporary cements when the composition of cemens and saliva pH differs. Material and methods – five temporary cements – TempBond™ NE, Repin, Harward TEMP Cem, Caryosan and Tempo SIL 2 – were mixed so that their inicial weight would be 200 mg. The suspensions of artificial saliva were prepared so that their pH values would be 6, 6,5, 7 and 7,5. The speciments of temporary cements were held in artificial saliva for 1, 2, 7 and 30 days. After each time pasted, cements were removed from artificial saliva, drained and weighed. The changes of weight of temporary cements’ speciments were estimated. Results – temporary cements reacted in two ways – they dissolved or absorbed the liquids. Tempo SIL 2 had the highest stability, Caryosan was the most soluble and Harward absorbed liquids the most. The biggest changes in weight of temporary cements were when pH value of artificial saliva was 6,5. Eugenol was responsible for higher solubility of cements when pH values were acidic, silane – for higher stability, methacrylate and organic acids increased the absorption of cements. Conclusions – the solubility of cements depends on the cements’ composition – cements without eugenol were the most stable, silane increased resistance to moisture, organic acids and methacrylate stimulated absorption.
